Linux Step by Step
Step 1 Your Physical Connection
Make sure all your phones have a filter installed (this means every phone connected to your ADSL number in your premises). Notice the filters can be plugged in back to front so make sure they are on the right way around. Ensure your ADSL Link Light is on SOLID (please see your modem guide). If your link light is not solid on you may not have ADSL CODES installed yet on your phone line. Please check the Application Status Page and ensure your connection is COMPLETE.
Step 2: Plug in your Modem.
Diagram here Plug your modem into the phone line without a filter. For those that have a security system please go here before proceeding.
Step 3: Connecting your modem to your PC
Start your computer. Once is has booted, log in as root.
If you have installed an xserver, start it (usually with the startx command).
Set the IP address and subnet mask on the network card connected to your modem.
Assuming your modem is connected to the first (or only) network card, eth0, type the following in a console.
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0
Your IP address should now be set to 192.168.1.2, and your subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0
You can check this with
ifconfig eth0
It should look something like this
Step 4: Configuring your modem
Open up a web browser and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.
This is the default IP address of your modem.
It is prefered to use graphical browers with frames support (ie, Mozila, Firefox, Netscape, Opera, Konqueror, etc), however, in a pinch systems without an xserver or being accessed remotely can use the lynx text based browser.
Warning : lynx will not render the modem config page correctly. The formating of the page will be broken, however you can still configure the modem to create a connection.
This should bring up a dialogue box for you to enter your Modem username and password. You will need to consult your modem manual to know what this is.
Enter your username and password as stated in the manual that came with your modem and press enter.
You have now logged onto your modem and need to enter the username and password into the modem so the modem can log on to the aaNet network.
From here you need to read the welcome pack for details on how to do this.
Not long now and you should be surfing
